The nautical - Steampunk style is synonymous with Jules Verne adventure novels. Cogs, machinery, Victoriana typefaces and dimmed colours are the identity of Steampunk.
Jules Verne. Michel Strogoff.
An original book cover design for a collection of Jules Verne novels features gold embossing and bright hues. These might be giveaway style for this era that I could feature in my designs.

Victorian travel posters

This is a rare travel poster from British India. The Railways were one the best gifts to India from the British in the 1800's. The first train started in Bombay and eventually all of India even the most remote parts were connected to each other by railway lines. Railways are a major part of Indian life, even today. The Train from Bombay to Poona is called the Deccan queen and holds a special place in Indian railways as a great luxurious accomplishment in the history of British India.Vintage poster
Although I knew quite a lot about the typography I was to use for the Victoriana theme, I wanted to look at these Victorian travel posters for ideas about colours and shapes. I noticed that more often than not the prints are in black and white. Inkeeping with authenticity but still making the ephemera colourful, I thought that maybe I could have photographs in the background of the posters of the different places on the trip while the foreground remains black/ white. Like these designs:

And so I am now looking into different background photos for the collection:

OUGD504 - Design for Print and Web - Research into printed event ephemera

Research into 'Printed Event Ephemera'

I want to know more about what is required to advertise and host an event in terms of printed paraphernalia. Firstly, I am looking at 'Yay' Festival design by Snask design. They've shown how their designs can go across a range of products such as a newspaper, website, souvenir poster, lanyard, ticket and smartphone app.
Mobile website created by Snask for the design event Yay Festival

This colourful map is a useful way to help direct the visitors around the event:

This heavily typographic design seems like an appropriate way to go about designing my collection. I really like the range of typefaces without any of them being overbearing or competitive with the other.

OUGD503 - Responsive - Great British Summer brief food packaging research

OUGD503 - Responsive - Great British Summer brief food packaging research

I have specified for this brief that it fulfils the following criteria :

  • The pack is fit for lap top transportation on public transport such as buses, coaches, tube trains. This means it must be small and compact enough to fit on your knee.
  • It must aid on-the-go eating so minimal mess, and handy ways of helping you balance all your food!
  • Must use minimal amount of materials - IE can be easily reused / recycled. If this were to be produced on mass it should not have significant environmental impact.
  • Could include different features like a clip to attach to your bike so it's easy to transport in public parks

This is a great idea - a pull out plate! This means that the user has a stable platform to eat their food off of!

Lovely touch - mock tablecloth inside. Perhaps could be picnic basket on the inside? Wicker?

resealable packs such as this minimise waste and therefor environmental impact.

The cutlery doubles up as a handle - creative!

Space saving sauce holder is good - is handheld so works well for eating on the go.

The milk is inside of the spoon so that you don't need so much extra packaging - space saving and environmentally friendly.

The box the food comes in couples up as a serving tray - meaning stability and space saved.

Again, these bottles save space and weight - not sure how people would feel about halving their drink's capacity though!

Good way to transport spherical fruit without it bruising?

Good way to transport cups of drinks in a secure way.

The lid doubles up as a knife meaning that there is no materials wasted.

I have researched separately into the Great British Summer itself, because I want to try and avoid stereotypes of buntin and the Queen!

OUGD503 - Responsive - Great British Summer brief visuals research

For this brief, I think that the best style that would suit the audience because of it's friendly visuals and bright colours would be 1950's style illustration:

This image is a really great reference for food in this style. The subtle gradients are a nice way to use the same colours on nearly all the objects in the composition.

Another way to incorporate all of the colours in the composition, misprinted mock up of screen print is also true to the style.

The flat bottoms on curved objects is synonymous with this style - would be good to include this on the likes of cups/ glasses/ bottles

The same colours would work well across a range of illustrations - meaning that you could create a pattern of similar colours - perhaps different colour scheme for each pack?

The big, blocky, hand drawn type grabs attention whilst still looking playful and fun. The colours used in this piece are also really nice and strong but not too harsh - never using primary colours or fully black but very dark grey.

The way the trees are illustrated in this is useful for woodland imagery suggestive of national parks and stately homes often visited in the Great British Summer

I really love the text used with the imagery.

The way the text works with the imagery in this makes a really nice composition that would suit packaging that doesn't have a particular way up.

The sketchy textures of this illustration are a perfect example of this style.

I really like how the union jack is represented in this without being too harsh but still being true.

I like the segmentation of imagery in this composition because it's easier to manage on the boxes themselves.

Again, the colours of the union jack are used subtley in this piece.
